What They Found, What They Hid, and Why You Are Still at Risk

A new "Quantitative Health Risk Assessment" was published regarding the safety of mattress fibers. It was an in-depth study required by California law (AB 1059) that is banning fiberglass from mattresses and furniture by 2027, as well as the use of Antimony Trioxide in any fibers (like modacrylic ones) that will still be allowed as fire retardants.

The industry is currently patting itself on the back, claiming these "new" fibers, coated in flame retardant chemicals, are seemingly "replacing" fiberglass and are completely "safe."

Let's start by decoding what this is really saying. First, they throw in "overly conservative assumptions." Then, notice it specifically states "modacrylic fiber without antimony" and mentions "the normal course of consumer use."

Basically, one can assume that antimony is still dangerous even when chemically bonded or coating the fibers, but we can't say that for sure—because they curiously did not test fibers containing antimony. They made sure to note this distinction explicitly, even in the report title.

The new California law specifically bans the use of Antimony in any fibers that can still be used in mattresses. So, let's go back to the only other study that has been conducted and made publicly available, from February 2022: "Fiberglass and Other Flame-Resistant Fibers in Mattress Covers" published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Fiberglass & Irritants

Fiberglass, sometimes referred to as man-made vitreous fibers (MMVF), is a known respiratory, skin, and eye irritant and can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract and may worsen existing breathing problems. In occupational settings, fiberglass exposure has been correlated with recurrent chest infections and pulmonary fibrosis.

Prompted by concerns that chronic inhalation could pose lung cancer risks, the IARC reviewed literature in 2001 and categorized it as Group 3 (unclassifiable). However, the real danger depends heavily on its inhalability (size) and biopersistence (durability inside the lung).

The "Sock" Secrets & Antimony

The 2022 independent study analyzed mattress covers using advanced microscopy. What they discovered inside the "socks" wrapping the internal core was alarming:

  • Hidden Chemicals: Synthetic fibers contained sub-micron, brighter inclusions characteristic of manufactured polymers with inorganic additives.
  • Toxic Cocktail: EDS chemical analysis revealed regions highly enriched with chlorine (Cl) and antimony (Sb), consistent with flame retardants using toxic metal synergists.
  • Unlabeled Disclosures: The presence of fiberglass was not disclosed on the prominent text labels of the most popular mattress brands tested, leaving consumers completely unaware.

The Real-World Danger: Fragmentation & Leakage

The new 2025 industry report claims safety based entirely on "intact" fibers—meaning fibers that stay permanently locked inside the core. The study did not go any further than this and therefore does not apply to fibers that escape the cover through removal, structural degradation, or cheap thinning of materials.

Fragmentation Dynamics

While internal glass fibers started as uniform, straight strands (5–10 µm thick), researchers found that they break down rapidly into shorter fragments under everyday shifting, some shrinking below 50 µm.

Inhalation Mechanics

The study concluded that these shattered airborne fragments are small enough to be potentially inhalable straight into upper head airways and lung tissues.

The Case of the 6-Year-Old Child

This isn't theoretical. In an actual incident investigated by the CDPH in 2021, a 6-year-old child suffered persistent, unexplained skin and respiratory irritation linked directly to fiberglass leakage from a mattress purchased in 2018. The home required a massive cleanup response, including discarding the mattress, all bedroom carpeting, and clothing.

Children, infants, and pets represent a special potential risk group. They jump on beds (accelerating structural fiber breakage), stay closer to floor surfaces, and dogs navigate environments directly with their noses.
